If you live in the European Union and you live with RP, you will have for the first time, a therapy that may save and/or restore your sight. Over 2 million people in the world, including myself live with a disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a degenerative retinal disease that usually causes total blindness. Until now, there were no therapies to slow down progression, and certainly nothing that would restore sight.
A device called the ScyFIX 700 uses microcurrent neuromodulation. The treatment works by administering a tiny electrical current that stimulates the body's natural healing systems. In the companies study, 85% of participants had their field of vision increased or stabilized and 63% of participants had increased vision.
The treatment is only approved for people with RP for right now, but the company hopes that it will soon be approved for Aged-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) which effects 50 million people world wide. ScyFIX is also in the process of getting FDA approval so that people like me can have access to this technology.
Here is a link to a video describing how the ScyFIX 700 works.
I hope that this treatment will become available in the states. I know for me, the one thing I really miss is reading. If this device could restore my vision enough to read I think I would be really happy.
If you had this treatment available, what do you think it would be like to regain vision? What would you do if you could see again?
