Giving a Blind Fifth Grader the Freedom to Run Unassisted

One thing that many blind people struggle with, including myself is finding safe ways to get exercise. There are ways to modify sports and other activities, but sometimes people aren't aware of how to make those activities accessible. For one fit grader, running by himself will no longer be an activity that he can't do. Thanks to grants and other donations, Hunter Hall can run on the school's track unassisted.

I can only imagine how awesome that must feel for him. Many blind people don't give up running simply because they can't see, but they usually need a guide in order to stay safe. The new track that Hunter will be using has a modification that's so simple, yet ingenious.. There is a pole on the inside of the track. Attached to that pole is a rope that Hunter holds onto. By keeping the rope taught while he's running, he's guarantied to stay on the track. I hope that this is a modification that will be done to many more tracks. There is no reason the blind shouldn't be able to enjoy running on their own.

For the full story about the new track, please read this article.

What kind of exercises do you enjoy doing? What modifications have you made to continue to participate?

  1. This is fantastic news and it really must feel great to run on your own.

I am blind and currently in training with the hope to compete in ultra events.

I currently run with the aid of a guide runner, but unfortunately I lose that guide runner in september. I do plan to continue my training and I am currently on the look out for another guide or will use the dreadmill to achieve my goals.

I also do olympic weightlifting, so certainly not letting the disability restrict my athletic abilities.

I blog about it over at www.andadapt.com it is a relatively new blog though so not a huge amount of posts about my training progress

  3. I am currently taking karate, specifically self defense. In the upcoming weeks, my instructor is going to help me run at a steady, fast pace by myself. Should be interesting. In terms of modifications, I am taking private lessons so that I can receive more individual attention. My instructor is very descriptive and patient when assisting me. Instead of focusing on sight, he's teaching me by focusing on sound and touch.
