One of my favorite features of the iPhone is Voice Control. This feature allows me to tell the phone to call someone rather than me typing in a number or finding the person in my contacts list. My only complaint is that if the application doesn't hear me right or if there is too much noise I can end up calling the wrong person. The flaw is that the application doesn't verify with you that it got what you said right, it just starts dialing.
When this does happen I frantically try to end the call before it rings for the first time. I'm never successful which means that the person on the other end knows that I've called them and now has to wonder why I hung up. I suppose that I could just talk to the person my phone decided to call, but I'm not sure what I would say if that's not the call I intended to make. You can tell Voice Control a whole phone number, but this defeats in my opinion the whole point of having an accessible address book. I am trying to not have to memorize phone numbers.
Despite this minor frustration I think Voice Control is still one of my favorite things about my iPhone. Also, if at some point in the future I call you and hang up, it's not because I don't want to talk to you, it's just that my phone called you without my permission.

One thing I love about using Google's 411 service (besides the fact that it's free) is that the voice control confirms your choice before it dials.

I am new to the iPhone as well and discovered when adding contacts, you can do phonetic spellings of names. This may not be the answer to the noisy environment issues, but in case some names are pronounced oddly by the speech, it may help in better understanding.
ReplyDeleteWith Apple's recent acquisition of the Siri assistant, I predict the Voice Control features will improve steadily over the next few software revisions.
